A Trip to the Theatre: Hamilton
Last week I went to see Hamilton. Not only was it my first time being back in a theatre since the pandemic began, but it was also my first time seeing a touring Broadway show. All of my previous experiences seeing shows has been either community theatre or college. Needless to say, it was a thrilling experience.
Last summer I, like many others, eagerly awaited the Disney+ release of Hamilton. I am so grateful that the show was made available to stream. This was a great decision for several reasons: 1) the pandemic limited live shows; 2) attending a Broadway show is often cost prohibitive and inaccessible; 3) and it offers a chance to see the original cast in action.
However, a live show is an entirely different experience. Energy radiated from the cast so far that I could easily feel their excitement and passion from my nosebleed seat. The energy was contagious. The audience was constantly reacting to what was happening onstage with cheers, laughter, booing, and tears. During the opening number, we were all on the edge of our seats anticipating that famous entrance: “Alexander Hamilton.” The actor had to wait nearly half a minute for the screams to die down before he continued: “my name is Alexander Hamilton.” There were many moments like this one — where it was clear all of us in the audience knew what was…
