I am writing this in snippets in between my classes this week. It is a strange feeling sitting in a classroom once again, but I am thrilled to be here and to be learning in person with my peers. As this is my second and final year in my master’s program, it is time for me to begin writing my thesis and planning for the future.

Now that I am getting back into the swing of work and writing, you can expect many new blog posts every week. While I cannot say for sure what all I will be writing about, I can guarantee that there will be an emphasis on musical communities from a variety of time periods and genres of music. I am so excited to use this platform to share everything I am learning and to have you all go on this journey with me.

If you read my blog post “The Arts in the Age of the Internet,” you will remember how much I love the internet and what a valuable tool for the arts I have found it to be. My research this year will center around using internet archives as a research tool.

Back to School Playlist

by Chloe Smith

I’m starting my PhD in Music History back at Yale this semester, and I’m super excited to get back in the swing of things after my year off. I’m in the middle of prepping for my entrance exam next week, but I took a little time to make a Back to School playlist for this week’s blog post.

It’s got a mix of modern pop and indie music, 70s and 80s pop music, and jazz standards, all attempting to fit loosely into a “back to school” vibe — whether that’s cozy-feeling production to capture autumn, explicit references to school or fall, or just my arbitrary decision that a song fit what I was going for.

Hope you enjoy, and happy start of the Fall 2021 semester!
